Diagnosis first

What a service technician checks

Good diagnosis starts with the exact symptom, model, operating conditions, and service history. The technician tests the systems connected to the failure instead of replacing parts by guesswork.

  • Power, supply, and controls to confirm the machine can start and complete its normal sequence.
  • Airflow, water, heat, and movement as applicable to the exact equipment type.
  • Error history and model data before matching parts, manuals, or service information.

Model reference

Symptoms and care

Bastion Service repairs Pitco fryers. These model and manual references help identify your equipment; symptoms alone do not confirm a diagnosis.

Manual candidates require the complete model, serial/build and installed controller to be checked. A specification sheet is not an operating manual. These references do not authorize installation or DIY repair.

Repair service only. New equipment installation is not offered.

SE / SEH / SEM operation and care3 topics Back to models and manuals

Official operation manual: L20-246-R7-SE-SEH-SEM.pdf

Describe the display, heating and pump separately

A dark display, a heat indication without element heat and a silent filter pump lead to different checks. The SE-family chart includes supply or fuse conditions, high-limit interruption and filter-drive or switch concerns. Tell the technician which functions still operate; those observations do not identify one failed component.

Daily care does not replace qualified inspection

This electric-family schedule separates daily filtering and cleanup, weekly care, a monthly temperature check and at-least-annual qualified inspection. Heavy production or heavily battered food may require more frequent daily attention. Use the procedure for the installed equipment; an annual inspection does not cover the work needed between visits.

DRAINING or TURN OFF needs drain-state context

A drain handle that is not fully closed or a sensing-switch concern can leave these messages displayed in this edition. Record the wording and what happened immediately before it appeared. Do not assume the computer has failed or attempt an internal switch adjustment; that requires service assessment.

Solstice SSH operation and care3 topics Back to models and manuals

Official operation manual: L20-378.pdf

Heat interruption and poor oil return differ

An active controller without heat can involve the high-temperature or self-cleaning-burner safety circuit. Slow oil return has a separate filter-media, strainer or pan-connection path. Report the failed function and any recurring shutdown rather than repeatedly resetting the fryer or ordering a pump based on the symptom alone.

Identify the control before planning cleaning

The SSH manual calls for daily preventive care and at-least-annual qualified inspection. Its solid-state thermostat, digital control and computer do not share one cleaning sequence. Trained staff need the procedure for the fitted control; a generic boil-out recipe is not a substitute.

Capture the actual display instead of guessing a code

The display chart distinguishes heating and melt states from probe, drain, ignition and unsafe-temperature conditions. Identify the installed controller and record the exact message or symbol. Similar-looking controls are not interchangeable, and an operating-state display is not automatically a component-failure code.

SELV reduced-oil-volume electric operation3 topics Back to models and manuals

Official operation manual: L20-406-1.pdf

Reduced oil volume still needs daily filtration

This SELV electric edition specifies at least one complete filter cycle daily, preferably two, and a clean filter each day. Manual and automatic filtration configurations require their own procedures. Periodic or annual qualified inspection remains separate from routine care; the schedule does not authorize hot-system servicing by untrained staff.

Separate a heating state from a filter-return problem

A lit controller without heat can reflect melt operation or a high-limit interruption. Slow return, excessive bubbles and cloudy returned oil follow different checks involving media, pickup engagement, seals or the pan. Describe the sequence and the affected function rather than treating all three observations as a failed pump.

Drain messages and probe messages are different clues

In this edition, Draining Turn Off has drain-handle, switch or communication context. Probe Op or Open belongs to a separate sensing path. Record the exact display and controller identity. Neither message confirms the part to replace, and neither permits bypassing a drain or temperature safeguard.

SSHLV reduced-oil-volume gas operation3 topics Back to models and manuals

Official operation manual: L20-407.pdf

Keep gas-family heat and filtration complaints distinct

No heat can involve melt operation, gas supply or safety limits. Temperature instability has sensing and gas-pressure considerations, while slow return or bubbles point to a different filter, pickup or pan path. Report the observation without adjusting gas pressure or assuming the same cause explains every symptom.

SSHLV routine care and service inspections differ

Daily filtering and cleanup remain necessary on this gas reduced-oil-volume family. Periodic or annual technician inspection covers additional gas, flue, control and fitted-filter concerns. These are manufacturer maintenance references, not proof of a service company's authorization or a new installation service.

A top-off reminder is not a universal heating fault

The controller material separates heating states, probe conditions, drain or ignition events, filter reminders and a low or empty JIB. Capture the actual wording and the operation in progress. The message alone does not establish that the cooking circuit or top-off pump has failed.

SE diagnostic considerations3 topics Back to models and manuals

Official service reference: L22-330.pdf

A temperature difference needs measurement, not a guessed part

The SE service reference compares the temperature-sensing response with the actual oil temperature. Heating and safety contactors are separate components in the diagnostic path. A display-to-oil difference therefore does not, by itself, establish a failed probe or contactor. Qualified testing is needed before choosing a repair.

High-limit testing is not an owner check

The service manual's high-limit test deliberately takes the equipment beyond normal cooking conditions and is reserved for qualified technicians. Do not try to reproduce it, bypass a safety device or perform energized checks. Describe an unexplained shutdown when requesting service rather than testing the protection circuit yourself.

An indicator pattern is not a screen error number

The illustrated solid-state control uses a feedback/fault light. Record the pattern and control identity without removing an enclosure. Its indications cannot be treated as universal numeric display codes or transferred to another controller; the relevant visual table and operating conditions must stay with the service assessment.

SG / SSH gas diagnostic considerations2 topics Back to models and manuals

Official service reference: L22-345.pdf

A gas safety interruption has a combustion path

A rollout-related interruption can involve the self-cleaning-burner circuit, downdraft or a restricted flue or heat-tube path. These are gas-family diagnostic considerations, not electric-element checks. Leave gas-valve testing, measurements and adjustments to qualified service; the interruption alone does not prove which component failed.

Identify the solid-state control before interpreting its light

The pictured feedback light belongs to a particular gas-family solid-state controller. A repeated pattern is useful information, but it does not make the separate digital or computer controls equivalent. Record the indication and fitted control so the technician can use the correct reference instead of guessing a screen code.

SSHLV controls, filtration and service considerations6 topics Back to models and manuals

Official service reference: l22-392.pdf

No heat can originate at several stages

The SSHLV sequence separates control supply, drain interlock, protective switches, ignition and flame sensing from heat demand and feedback. A heat-failure indication does not identify the gas valve, controller or ignition module as defective. Safety-circuit interruptions need diagnosis, not bypasses or repeated reset attempts.

A blocked-drain lockout is not a power-cycle fix

In the documented automated-filter configuration, Blocked Drain - retry concerns missing confirmation that the drain closed. Unsuccessful retries can lead to a service lockout. The manual warns that unplugging and reconnecting to clear it can damage the valve. Do not clear a hot drain or use power cycling as a shortcut.

Optional top-off is not designed to fill an empty vat

The optional system replaces small oil losses. This edition pauses top-off while the controller is off, melting, cooking or heating and expects a ready or idle condition. A pause during one of those states is not enough to diagnose a pump or probe; identify the fitted option and operating state first.

Reservoir care has no universal weekly interval here

Residue around the top-off sensing reservoir can interfere with operation. This manual recommends occasional cleaning with the vat empty and cool, without a fixed weekly or monthly interval. Keep its separate end-of-day crumb-removal requirement and water-related pump-seal warnings with the proper trained-staff procedure.

Cooking and top-off sensors require different checks

The cooking-temperature probe and the top-off probe do not use interchangeable tests. Actual temperature and the correct sensor matter, and a protective device that is still hot can remain open without being defective. These are qualified-service distinctions; no resistance values, terminal measurements or replacement steps are provided here.

Automatic drains require controlled service access

Drain actuators can move unexpectedly. Keep hands and objects away, and do not use a filter pan to transport oil. Qualified service isolation is different from unplugging a locked-out fryer to force a restart. Gas work and internal access require controlled preparation; water jets and hot-oil contact create additional hazards.

SELV sensing and safety considerations2 topics Back to models and manuals

Official service reference: l22-393.pdf

SELV sensing concerns need the correct temperature context

The SELV reference distinguishes an open circuit, a short and an unwanted connection to the appliance frame. A difference between the displayed and actual oil temperature is not automatically a defective sensor. Qualified diagnosis must identify the correct probe and evaluate its response at the measured temperature.

Shared branding does not mean shared electrical values

Do not transfer SE component values to SELV or infer installed parts from the Pitco name. High-limit contactor work and internal probe or contactor measurements are service procedures. Provide the complete model and describe the symptom; do not attempt energized testing or parts substitution as a customer check.

C-series operation and care2 topics Back to models and manuals

Official operation manual: L20-072-R11_35C40S-C-D45C65C_IO_Manual.pdf

Describe whether the pilot or main burner stops

This flowchart distinguishes a pilot that will not light, one that will not stay lit and main burners that will not light. High-limit and thermostat conditions are part of the diagnosis. Report which stage fails; do not turn the chart into repeated relighting or gas-purging experiments.

Filtering, tank cleaning and inspection have separate intervals

The C-series edition specifies oil filtering at least daily, tank cleaning at least weekly and qualified inspection at least annually. Each task has different safety and skill requirements. Routine care does not replace combustion and temperature-control assessment, and the schedule is not a set of hot-oil handling instructions.

VF35 / VF65 care and safety2 topics Back to models and manuals

Official operation manual: L20-418_R4_VF_Series_-IO-Manual.pdf

VF care continues between service inspections

For the covered VF family, daily filtering and at-least-weekly tank cleaning are separate from at-least-annual qualified inspection. Gas, combustion and temperature-control work are not ordinary exterior cleanup. Trained staff should follow the complete procedure for the unit rather than borrowing another family's maintenance sequence.

Treat an unexplained high-temperature shutdown seriously

The high-temperature limit interrupts operation when oil becomes unsafe. A shutdown is a protection event, not permission for repeated resets. Follow the manufacturer cooldown precautions and do not add oil prematurely. An unexplained interruption needs assessment before normal operation resumes.

SG / SGF all-options operation3 topics Back to models and manuals

Official operation manual: L20-206-R6-SG-All-Options-IO.pdf

Use the all-options edition for its cleaning schedule

The SG/SGF all-options manual separates daily exterior care from weekly tank cleaning. Filter media are checked for damage during the weekly work. Keep this schedule with the fitted configuration; it does not establish one maintenance interval for every gas fryer carrying an SG prefix.

LoC, HEAt and droP describe different control states

On the pictured digital controller, LoC relates to protected programming, HEAt to heating below setpoint and droP to readiness. These are not a list of failed components. Match the installed control before interpreting a display, and do not apply this digital-controller wording to the separate multi-level computer.

Keep cleaning water out of the oil-filter system

The source warns against filtering without the required media, draining while burners remain on and sending cleaning water through the oil-filter pump. Residual water can later contact hot oil. These warnings are not a draining or boil-out tutorial; trained staff must use the complete shutdown and cleaning procedure.

SG18HP / SGM operation and filtration3 topics Back to models and manuals

Official operation manual: L20-281.pdf

SG18HP/SGM daily and weekly care

The reviewed English section calls for daily exterior cleaning and weekly tank cleaning, including inspection of filter media. Those tasks belong to this equipment configuration. They do not establish a schedule for every gas-family variant or replace the safety requirements of the complete cleaning procedure.

Filter seating is a diagnostic observation, not a verdict

This arrangement depends on correctly seated media, support and retaining parts, plus the mating return connection. Debris affecting seating is an inspection concern. Those facts alone do not establish the cause of poor return or a failure rate; report the behavior and let the fitted assembly guide assessment.

The pan and drain have hot-oil limits

The filter pan is intended for one tank at a time. Hot shortening, careless drain clearing and water left in filter lines create separate hazards. Do not use these warnings as instructions for handling exposed hot oil or clearing an active drain; trained personnel need the complete equipment procedure.

Stand-alone SG thermostat operation2 topics Back to models and manuals

Official operation manual: l20-195-R7-IOM-SG-No-Option.pdf

Temperature mismatch and uncontrolled heating differ

A difference between the dial setting and measured oil temperature needs evaluation, not an assumed thermostat replacement. The manual's lowest-setting warning belongs to a hot-oil calibration check, not a stand-alone owner fault test. Do not deliberately heat oil to reproduce the condition. If heating becomes uncontrolled during use, stop using the fryer and arrange qualified service. Calibration remains a service procedure.

Standby is not the same as full shutdown

This manual distinguishes temporary standby from full shutdown and warns against overnight standby. Residual cleaning water can cause hot-oil splatter, and damaged sensing components can affect operation. Use the correct shutdown and cleaning procedure; do not improvise gas-lighting, adjustment or manual burner-pulsing steps.

E35 electric operation and care3 topics Back to models and manuals

Official operation manual: L20-454-R0-E35-Series-IO-Manual.pdf

E35 panel lights help separate no-operation complaints

The basic table distinguishes a non-running fryer with dark panel lights from one with lights on. Supply, control-fuse or transformer checks differ from the high-limit, probe and temperature-control path. Record the light state; these are diagnostic possibilities, not confirmed failures or a ranking of likely parts.

Poor regulation and failure to switch off differ

The troubleshooting table lists probe and high-limit concerns for poor temperature regulation. Its separate warning about elements not switching off at the lowest setting appears within a hot-oil calibration check. Do not heat oil or adjust the thermostat to reproduce that condition. If the fryer overheats or heating becomes uncontrolled, stop using it and arrange qualified service. Report what happened during normal operation and identify the fitted control.

Follow the electric care procedure without an empty-tank test

This E35 edition specifies daily cleaning and thorough cleaning at least weekly for the illustrated electric-thermostat option. Never energize an empty tank or place solid shortening blocks on exposed elements. Keep water away from hot oil, and do not repeatedly reset an unexplained high-limit interruption.

SG14C and SG1824: stand-alone identification2 topics Back to models and manuals

Manufacturer operating-manual cover; identity only | Document: L20-195 / R7 (07/2016)

SG14C: include the final C when requesting repair

SG14C appears by that exact name in Pitco's July 2016 no-options/stand-alone manual. Send the full model and serial number from the nameplate. Do not substitute SG14DI or shorten the name to SG14 when choosing a reference; those labels do not establish the same equipment configuration.

SG1824: keep the model number exactly as printed

Pitco's July 2016 no-options/stand-alone manual lists SG1824. Keep that complete model number with your repair request rather than changing it to SGM1824 or splitting it into other SG models. The manual date is not the manufacture date of your fryer, and the model name alone does not confirm the installed controls.

Older SG and SGM: model, control and filtration identification5 topics Back to models and manuals

Manufacturer parts reference; not an operating or fault-code manual | Document: L20-221 / Rev 7 (06/14)

An older Pitco model may be absent from today's product list

SG18F, SGM1824 and SGM34 are named in Pitco's June2014 SG parts manual. Keep the full model and serial number when requesting repair; shortening SG18F to SG18 can send the technician to the wrong reference.

Match the equipment, not the download-folder date

This manual is revision7 from June2014 and says it covers equipment built after November1999. Those dates are not your fryer's manufacture date. A readable nameplate helps confirm whether this reference fits the installed unit.

Include a photo of the control panel

The SG parts book separates earlier and later control-box designs and lists several control options. Include an exterior panel photo with the full model and serial number. A shared SG model prefix does not establish which controller or display-message guide applies; do not open an electrical enclosure to identify it.

A filter-pump complaint needs the installed configuration

For a fryer equipped with filtration, tell the technician whether the pump is silent, runs without returning oil, or returns oil slowly, based on what you already observed. Pitco's parts book separates pump assemblies before and after March2004 and includes further component-date notes. These lists help identify hardware; they do not prove that the pump caused the symptom. Do not run a hot-oil test or remove covers to gather this information.

A parts drawing is not an error-code diagnosis

This reference identifies assemblies and options, not a universal fault-code table. Report the exact display wording and observed behavior separately. The matching operating or controller manual is still needed before a message can be interpreted for an older SG fryer.

SE and SFSE: electric fryer configuration identification6 topics Back to models and manuals

Manufacturer parts or specification reference; not a model-specific operating approval | Document: L22-277 / Rev 4

Manufacturer parts or specification reference; not a model-specific operating approval | Document: L10-172 / Rev 6

Keep every letter and digit on the nameplate

SE and SFSE references are not interchangeable abbreviations. Keep the entire model, including T, R or X where present, and the serial number when requesting repair. A parts reference for SE147 or SE714 does not automatically match an SFSE14 unit.

For a twin-tank fryer, identify the affected side

SFSE14T, SFSE14TR and SFSE14TX are listed as twin-tank models. When reporting uneven heating or a shutdown, say whether it affected the left side, right side or both, using what you already observed. This narrows the service description without identifying a failed element or control; do not repeat an unsafe event to test the other side.

SFSE148 and SFSE184 are separate series

The two series have similar-looking model numbers, but the specification lists different fry-area orientations. Send the nameplate rather than choosing a model by appearance or cabinet size. Do not substitute a 148 reference for 184 when requesting parts or repair.

The model alone does not identify the control panel

The 2022 SFSE specification lists a standard solid-state thermostat and optional digital or I12 computer controls. A clear exterior panel photo and the exact display wording help select the right reference. Do not use a computer message list for a thermostat-only panel, or assume a pictured option is fitted to your fryer.

Describe filtering and heating separately

For SE147 or SE714, explain whether the complaint concerns cooking temperature, oil return during filtering, or both. The parts reference lists separate control-panel and pump assemblies; it does not diagnose either from the symptom alone. Record what happened during normal use without opening covers or conducting a hot-oil test.

An older parts note does not date the whole fryer

This parts book includes a pre-May 2003 note for one tank-element gasket. That note is not a manufacture date for every model in the book. Let the technician match the actual equipment and serial details before selecting a replacement; no owner disassembly is needed to report the nameplate.

SG Drop-in: identification and service observations5 topics Back to models and manuals

Manufacturer historical specification; stand-alone operating applicability unresolved | Document: L10-011 / Rev6 (02/07)

Manufacturer historical specification; stand-alone operating applicability unresolved | Document: L20-195 / R7 (07/2016)

Manufacturer historical specification; stand-alone operating applicability unresolved | Document: L20-221 / Rev7 (06/14)

Keep DI in the model number

Pitco's February 2007 Drop-in specification names SG14DI, SG14RDI, SG14TDI and SG18DI. Include the complete model and serial number with your repair request. A stand-alone SG model with a similar name is not enough to identify the correct operating instructions or replacement parts.

Describe what happened before the fryer stopped heating

The listed design uses a standing pilot and a gas control that prevents main-burner flow without an established pilot. Tell the technician whether the fryer failed to heat from startup or stopped during normal use, and report any pilot loss you already observed. That description does not identify a failed part. Do not relight repeatedly, test gas flow or bypass a safety control to reproduce the problem.

Unexpected overheating needs service

The specification describes a temperature-limit device that interrupts gas flow if the fryer gets too hot. An unexpected shutdown alone does not prove that this device failed or activated. If the fryer overheats, stop using it and arrange qualified service; do not bypass a limit or repeatedly reset it to keep cooking.

For SG14TDI, report which tank is affected

The SG14TDI specification lists oil capacity and gas input per tank. When requesting repair, say whether the symptom affects one tank or both and describe what each side did during normal use. This is information for the technician, not proof that the cause is confined to one side. Do not run additional heating tests to compare them.

Match the installed control before using an error-code guide

This historical Drop-in specification describes a millivolt thermostat, not a computer fault-code display. A code list from another Pitco family is not a confirmed match. Send the full nameplate and an accessible exterior control-panel photo so the technician can identify the equipment without removing covers.

C-series: plus-sign, serial and fuel identification5 topics Back to models and manuals

Manufacturer parts or operating cover; plus and non-plus models remain separate | Document: L22-229 / R4 (02/15)

Manufacturer parts or operating cover; plus and non-plus models remain separate | Document: L20-072 / R11 (9/24)

Keep the plus sign when reporting the model

Pitco's parts book names 35C+ and 45C+, while the operating-manual cover uses names without a plus sign. Send the full nameplate rather than shortening the model. That distinction helps the technician choose the correct reference; a similar name does not establish identical parts or controls.

The serial number matters for a tank or flue repair

The 45C+ parts reference separates tank and flue components by serial range, including G90J-G98K and a separate POST G98L group. Provide the complete serial number for matching. These strings are not a manufacture-year lookup, and they do not establish which part should be replaced.

A gas-control complaint needs the installed configuration

The parts book has separate Robertshaw and millivolt control sections, with different thermostat and valve references. Tell the technician what happened during normal use and include the model and serial number. Do not remove controls, alter gas settings or order a valve from a similar-looking diagram.

Include the fuel designation on the rating plate

This reference distinguishes natural-gas and LP components and also contains separately marked CE configurations. Include a readable rating-plate photo with your repair request. The existence of both fuel versions in a parts list is not permission to interchange components or convert the appliance.

A 35C+/45C+ parts book is not a confirmed 65-series match

Do not use the 35C+/45C+ cover as proof that a listed replacement fits a 65C or 65C+. The available references have different stated scopes. Give the technician the exact model and serial number so the correct parts reference can be confirmed.

Maintenance

Prevent avoidable breakdowns

Maintenance intervals come from the instructions for the exact model and its operating conditions. Heavy use, heat, dust, grease, hard water, and poor ventilation can shorten the interval.

Keep airflow clear

Clean accessible filters and keep vents, coils, and surrounding space free of dust, grease, boxes, and fabric.

Watch for early changes

Longer cycles, unstable temperature, new sounds, leaks, and repeated error messages are reasons to schedule service before a shutdown.

Use the exact instructions

Cleaning products, procedures, filters, and intervals vary by model. Follow the manufacturer instructions for the exact equipment.
